However, in recent decades, tourism, cultivations and hurricanes have harmed some. That is the case of Viñales, declared as Cultural Landscape of Humanity in 1999, which has undergone significant changes in the last 20 years despite land use plans for the territory and the growing concerns of heritage institutions. Among the mentioned causes of impacts, large areas have been rapidly urbanised with no urban planning. Other contributing factors like the degradation of natural vegetation and reducing areas for traditional crops such as tobacco have put the territory under significant stress. All these threaten to endanger its heritage status. The present study uses the analysis and modelling tools available in geographic information systems to map, quantify and predict the transformations and anticipate future land use and land cover changes of land use and their impact over areas of high visual fragility within the Heritage Area. The unpublished data contribute to understanding the processes and their magnitude and can improve our knowledge of how land use changes will affect landscape quality. The results support the case from Pinar del Rio’s Provincial Directorate of Heritage that aimed to preserve the patrimonial and landscape values of this western Cuba site." @default.
