Caatinhga plants: contextualizing botanical content Abstract The flora of the Caatinga has several species with fruitful and therapeutic potential, in addition to presenting adaptive mechanisms for living with the semiarid region. Despite this potential, students are often unaware of the cultural, social and environmental possibilities associated with this biome. This is often due to the lack of contextualization when approaching this theme. Considering this factor, the objective of this research was to develop and apply an educational project focusing on plants in the Caatinga and on a contextualized approach to botany contents with high school students. The research had a qualitative approach and involved second-year students from a state school in the city of Crateús/Ce. Data collection took place through the application of a questionnaire to identify the students' prior knowledge, followed by an exposition of the Caatinga flora content and the development of a practical class with the identification of native plants of this biome. The project contributed to the expansion of students' knowledge about the vegetation of the Caatinga, including the environmental importance and issues related to the adaptation of plants to the Brazilian semiarid climate. The students thought they knew the Caatinga and expressed interest in the flora of this biome, but, in general, they showed little prior knowledge on this subject. This research contributed to a contextualized approach to the contents of botany, especially because it involved morphophysiological aspects of plants from the Caatinga, in addition to environmental and cultural issues in the Northeast region.
