Fish samples (n = 180) were collected and analyzed for heavy metals and radionuclides using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and gamma spectrometry system, respectively. Results for Cr ranged from 0.010 ± 0.003 mg/kg (UAC) to 0.38 ± 0.26 mg/kg (Mkpanak), Zn from 9.8 ± 1.1 mg/kg (UAC) to 20.5 ± 2.5 mg/kg (Mkpanak), Mn from 0.18 ± 0.07 mg/kg (UAC) to 10.5 ± 6.3 mg/kg (Mkpanak), Cd from 0.25 ± 0.13 mg/kg (UAC) to 3.4 ± 2.6 mg/kg (Iwuochang), Ni from 0.020 ± 0.01 mg/kg (UAC) to 16.7 ± 12 mg/kg (Iwuochang), K40 from 407 ± 18 Bq/kg (UAC) to 508 ± 350 Bq/kg (Iwuochang), U238 from 1.1 ± 0.04 Bq/kg (UAC) to 14.5 ± 9.4 Bq/kg (Mkpanak), and Th232 from 0.020 ± 0.01 Bq/kg (UAC) to 5.3 ± 3.7 Bq/kg (Iwuochang). The Cr, Mn, Cd (Iwuochang beach only), Ni, K40, U238, and Th232 in the fishes were from anthropogenic sources. Health risk data revealed that Cd poses serious non-carcinogenic threats, while Cd, Ni, Cr, and U238 poses carcinogenic threats to fish consumers. Findings reveal the necessity for total restoration of the river." @default.
