- W4293176672 abstract "The involvement of microorganisms in waste management have some limitations in the management of waste comprising degrading organic matter, heavy metals, aromatic compounds and xenobiotic compounds. To address those hurdles, a new approach to genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs) has caught the attention of microbiologists and environmentalists. The addition of genetically modified microorganisms produced by insertion of the specific novel genes enhanced the degradation capacity of the microbes. Genetically modified microbes expressing desired degrading characteristics result in a safer and cleaner environment. The microbial communities present in the contaminated sites have evolved unique characteristics in their genes that help them to resist harsh conditions. Advanced techniques and innovative methodologies have made it possible to engineer microbes with such a combination of genes that do not exist in nature. With the advent of micro-biotechnology, various methods like rational designing and directed evolution are now used globally. Hence, GMMs give an excellent alternative solution for the wild strains that degrade ingredients of waste slowly or not at all. The use of GMMs for waste management is both environment-friendly and cost-effective compared to the traditional methodologies. A variety of molecular tools such as molecular cloning, horizontal gene transfer, CRISPR-Cas system etc. are used to genetically modified microorganisms. This chapter represents the applications of genetically modified microorganisms in solid waste processing." @default.
