Somebody's Murdered Uncle: There's Nothing to Stop us Now, Dear, J. Allington Slade, Bloggins, Birch & Frome, I should have trusted you, darling, There's No Such Thing as a Perfect Crime. Wanda Brister, a highly regarded voice teacher at Florida State University, has done all of us a tremendous service by opening our eyes to the fascinating music of Great Britain's Madeleine Dring (1923–1977). A brilliantly gifted composer, singer, entertainer, and actress, Dring's wide ranging talents defy easy or convenient categorization, and this is probably a major reason why she does not enjoy the renown that her gifts and accomplishments merit. Even if one focuses on her compositions alone, one sees an artist who traveled fluidly among genres and styles to an extent that is quite uncommon and which may have ultimately diluted her cultural impact. Another reason for Dring's relative obscurity is that many of her cabaret songs, including most of the songs on this disk, were written for rather loosely organized revues with little regard for their lasting value. Consequently, many of these songs were essentially discarded and forgotten, and some remain lost. Also, Dring died suddenly and unexpectedly at age 53 before much of her music had been published. Her husband Roger Lord, long time principal oboe for the London Symphony Orchestra, undertook the arduous process of gathering up her music and preparing it for publication, but much of this work remained incomplete at the time of his death in 2014. Brister has devoted much of the last two decades of her life and career to studying Dring's legacy, learning and performing her music, co-writing a biography about her, and arranging for many more of her songs to be published and shared with the world. The disk at hand, Madeleine Dring: The Lady Composer, is the latest recording from Brister, and this may be the most entertaining and interesting release yet. It also marks the end of an era because of the recent death of one of Brister's most important collaborators. Courtney Kenny (1934–2021), a famous and beloved figure in British music, knew Dring and performed with her on numerous occasions. Brister met Kenny in 2004 after seeing his cabaret act, and the two struck up a friendship that was cemented by their mutual devotion to Dring's legacy. It was through Kenny that Brister gained access to many of the cabaret songs that she has gone on to both perform and record with such distinction. He is a vibrant presence on this disk, and it is rightfully dedicated to his memory as well as to his beloved wife Caroline. Courtney Kenny's singing is featured in nine of these thirty songs. For a man in his mid-eighties, his voice is remarkably nimble and fresh sounding, and he exudes a disarming, natural ease with the genre of cabaret singing. Contralto Nuala Willis brings to the table a similar mastery of the style along with a creaking, craggy voice that sounds like it's a hundred years old—in the best sense of the word. She bestows her unique magic to every measure of music she sings. Baritone Matt Cooksey's opulent voice rings out easily and richly; he may not be quite as deeply steeped..." @default.
