- W4293244998 abstract "The CT scan has proved to be an invaluable aid in following the postsurgical closed canal ear. It has also proved to be a viable alternative to the second-look operation and, in many instances, has enabled the patient to avoid an unnecessary surgical exploration. In a high percentage of patients, CT provides specific information regarding the presence or absence of recurrent or residual cholesteatoma. Perhaps the most important contribution of CT is to give the surgeon a detailed preview of the temporal bone prior to surgery, thus enabling him to operate without surprises. Evaluation of the sinus tympani prior to surgery can help the surgeon avoid a tedious and often risky dissection about the facial nerve in order to visualize this area. During the past year, CT examination has been employed as a routine study in our closed canal surgical patients and has proved itself many times over.2 We have instituted a policy of obtaining a limited baseline study on all new postsurgical cases at 3 to 6 months following surgery. Three or four representative slices are obtained in the temporal bone and will be used in the future for comparison purposes. This should increase the accuracy of the follow-up scan substantially. Many applications for CT in the postsurgical ear have yet to be discovered, but certainly, it has been firmly established in our institution as a method of assessing the postoperative temporal bone." @default.
