- W4293273264 abstract "Diseases, especially epidemics, tend to throw the power relations within a society into sharp relief whereby the malaise in the body naturally often foregrounds the dis-eases in the body politic. This chapter seeks to explore how the themes of disease, motherhood, and healing with the help of traditional medicines are intertwined in Geraldine Brooks’ Year of Wonders (2001) and Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet (2020). Both historical novels are set in a time of an outbreak of bubonic plague occurring in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England. Through the perspectives and voices of Anne Frith and Agnes Shakespeare—bereaved mothers both—the novels establish and explore the tradition of herbal medicine and healing practices, the art of which is transmitted from one generation of women to another creating an exclusively matrilineal mode of knowledge. Epidemics do not discriminate based on gender, class, or race, but access to medicines and healing often does. Anne and Agnes, along with a group of other women attempt to resist the unequal burden of suffering that is often the lot of women through their knowledge and mediate the passage from disease to wellness fortified by a sense of female solidarity. In both the novels, the passage of a community from disease to wellness is accompanied by a corollary movement from dis-eased relationships to relatively healthier ones by accommodating and acknowledging the important role played by women in societal and personal relationships in sickness and in health." @default.
