- W4293317969 abstract "In Blinded by Curiosity, Joyce Zelen draws on contemporary letters, print albums and sale catalogues to offer a fascinating consideration of the life and activities of the ‘libertine’ collector–dealer Hadriaan Beverland. Although Beverland has been the subject of a number of studies, Zelen is unusual in approaching him from an art-historical perspective. Her examination of his collecting and dealing activities and his highly inventive ‘print collages’ proves a productive and enlightening means of reassessing one of the most unusual lives of the seventeenth century. Beverland was born in Middelburg, Zeeland, in 1650, and studied in the Netherlands and Oxford. In 1679 his studies of, and publications on, sexuality and sex (of which he was an enthusiastic practitioner as well as theorist) led to disgrace and exile from the Netherlands. The following year he travelled to England, where he had ties of both family and friendship, and where he would spend most of the remaining thirty-six years of his life. As Zelen notes, despite the challenges of moving to a new country, the libertine atmosphere fostered by Charles II in Restoration London can only have been appealing to the young man." @default.
