Biology is the science of life, devoted to the study of the behavior of living organisms on a macroscopic scale, where the classical mechanics is the supreme ruler. Quantum objects are small, cold, and well-controlled. Life is complex, disordered, ‘hot and wet.’ Although the impression that quantum mechanics is limited to the microworld governs the general understanding of science, recent experimental and theoretical studies challenge this neat dichotomy and demonstrate that natural macroscopic phenomena like photosynthesis, olfaction, and bird navigation can be investigated remarkably well through quantum mechanical formalisms. This is precisely what is now recognized as ‘quantum biology’: the application of quantum theory to aspects of biology for which classical physics fails to provide an accurate description." @default.
