The records of the corregidor de los naturales, a Spanish magistrate with purview over greater Lima, also provide detail about how local communities self-governed. Over a few years, the corregidor’s notary documented hundreds of Indigenous men and women requesting licenses to leave the jurisdiction of their pueblos in order to contract with Spaniards or with members of other pueblos de indios.
