The chapter also highlights how sacrificial religion can sometimes give way to a secular medicine (e.g., bleeding and circumcision) even less “rational” than its religious analogues. The reciprocal sexualization of medicine and medicalization of sex is especially emphasized, alongside Flaubert’s “medical” treatment of sexual swearing, as are medical interpretations of religious taboo (e.g., concerning pork). Flaubert also anticipates what are now called placebo and nocebo effects, whereby the Christian dictum that “the Word is made flesh” appears reincarnated in medical science." @default.
