THE AUTHORS ARE CONGRATULATED FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION OF MAKING ESTIMATES FOR THE SHEAR MODULUS FOR USE IN DYNAMIC ANALYSIS. MESSRS. DOBRY AND POBLETE STATE THAT THE PAPER PROVIDES A USEFUL INSIGHT INTO THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE THE SHEAR MODULUS OF NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED CLAYS. RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN CONCEPCION, CHILE, IS DISCUSSED WHICH WAS CONDUCTED TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF SOIL PROPERTIES ON EARTHQUAKE CHARACTERISTICS. METHODS USED TO OBTAIN A SHEAR WAVE VELOCITY WERE: (1) FIELD MEASUREMENTS MADE BY EXPLODING 12 SMALL DYNAMITE CHARGES AT DIFFERENT DEPTHS INSIDE THE BORING, (2) LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS MADE AT MIT USING THE PULSE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED BY LAWRENCE, (3) ESTIMATIONS MADE EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIPS WHICH ARE PRESENTED. A FIGURE IS PRESENTED WHICH SHOWS A COMPARISON OF THE OBTAINED SHEAR WAVE VELOCITY MEASUREMENTS. THIERS STATES THAT THE PAPER ADDS MUCH TO KNOWLEDGE OF SOIL PROPERTIES UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING. THE FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP WRITTEN FOR THE VIBRATION SHEAR MODULUS IS A USEFUL CONCEPT. HE WANTED TO KNOW HOW MUCH THE VOID RATIO CHANGED AS A DEVIATORIC STRESS COMPONENT WAS CHANGED.
