It can be approached from two different perspectives. The region-based approach identifies connected sets of pixels that correspond to individual objects. Boundary-based techniques locate and connect edge pixels to define the boundaries that separate the objects. Thresholding, region growing, and morphological processing are useful region-based techniques for image segmentation. Edge detection, boundary tracking, edge linking, and active contours are useful boundary-based image segmentation techniques.
