- W4294237437 abstract "Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a popular vertebrate model in developmental and molecular biology. Strengths of using the zebrafish include high fecundity rates, ex vivo embryonic development, shorter developmental periods, and transparency providing ease in visualization of structures at the earliest developmental stages. In addition, high genetic homology and conservation of developmental processes and disease pathways enables translation to humans. Furthermore, zebrafish are highly amenable to genetic modifications allowing creation and establishment of genetic models. Use of the zebrafish in toxicity studies has steadily increased over the past few decades and includes application in drug development and environmental toxicity studies. The high demand for alternatives to mammalian assays for chemical toxicity screens propelled development of zebrafish efficient high-throughput screenings including robotic and automated processes for phenotypic and behavioral screening of thousands of chemicals in short periods of time. In this chapter, past applications and methods for the zebrafish in drug and environmental toxicology studies are discussed providing confidence in current and future studies identifying the health effects of pharmaceutical pollutants." @default.
