- W4294286144 abstract "The number of trematode digenean species (∼18,000) infecting fish is likely to exceed the number of fish species estimated at 27,977 and thus comprise the largest group of metazoan parasites in fish and have been reported from almost every tissue or organ of fish. The life-cycle of digeneans is indirect, involving a mollusk intermediate host and a vertebrate final host. The life-stages are the egg, miracidium, sporocyst, redia, cercaria, metacercaria, and adult stages. In general, adult digeneans in the gastrointestinal tract of fishes produce little pathology, in contrast to the extraintestinal digenean species. Most digeneans that cause fish disease belong to the Diplostomoidea, Clinostomidae, and Heterophyidae and within the Diplostomoidea are the Diplostomidae, Bolpophoridae, Neodiplostoidae, and Strigeidae. The aim of this chapter is not to review the massive volume of information available on trematodes in fish, but rather to craft an introductory “fact sheet” on how these parasites cause disease using a number of major fish trematodes as examples. Trematodes are also highly significant zoonotic pathogens in the public health space, and the control of these parasites in farmed food fish will also be included to complete the brief discussion." @default.
