- W4294286204 abstract "Furunculosis or the “great red plague” of salmon and trout was first reported from Germany in 1894, and Bacterium salmonicida was named as the causative pathogen in hatchery. In the early 1900s, it spread to many countries in Europe, and by 1935, the disease was recognized as a major disease impacting salmon and trout production in the United States and Canada, as well as being a disease of wild fish. Furunculosis is a disease caused by Aeromonas salmonicida, and this bacterium is endemic in most fresh and marine aquatic environments. While furunculosis is a disease caused by typical A. salmonicida, this chapter will cover forms of the disease caused by atypical A. salmonicida. Typical A. salmonicida is A. salmonicida subsp. Salmonicida, and the atypical subspecies are A. salmonicida subsp. achromogenes, A. salmonicida subsp. masoucida, A. salmonicida subsp. smithia, and A. salmonicida subsp. nova." @default.
