- W4294336248 abstract "In an era in which dental implants and fixed prosthetic restorations have become common practice, patients with atrophic or avulsed alveolar bone expect a treatment plan for complete restoration of the bone and dentition. In cases of mild to moderate deficiencies, procedures such as guided bone regeneration, onlay bone graft, interpositional bone graft, or nerve lateralization can be considered. In moderate to severe deficiencies, alveolar distraction osteogenesis (ADO) is indicated. In this chapter the surgical procedure is detailed, as well as indications, advantages and disadvantages, complications, and two case presentations. Important points are detailed, regarding both the surgical procedure and the different phases of the process, including how to handle extremely severe cases. ADO allows for simultaneous elongation of bone and soft tissue. This is extremely important, as soft tissue is a key player in proper bone creation. ADO allows for greater bone elongation compared to other methods, spares the need for a bone graft/donor site, and is considered very stable, even following large elongations. Having said that, ADO requires close monitoring of the patient, demands surgical experience, and a learning curve is to be expected. Proper patient selection minimizes the risk of complications." @default.
