- W4294560972 abstract "While this chapter has its focus on the work of Michel Foucault, it commences by ‘digression’ to quote Benjamin’s method from his Trauerspiel study. Foucault’s work is especially concerned with how a past is retrieved, as forms of knowing defined by archaeology, as relations of force in genealogy, and as transformations of a self’s relations to itself in historical practices of one’s own ethos. The chapter initially develops an understanding of that notion of retrieval, from Derrida’s reading of how Heidegger understands being-historical in Being and time. It is this ontological horizon to historicity that will come to inform our reading of both Foucault and Benjamin. The crucial argument unfolds in terms of how repetition in retrieval is constitutive of primordial freedom. We recognise with Benjamin and Foucault, in their historicity, in how repetitions are thus recognised, the extent to which the question of freedom pertains. We already saw this in Benjamin’s understanding of involuntary memory. Kierkegaard’s understanding of repetition is discussed in relation to both Benjamin and Carl Schmitt, seemingly important for Benjamin’s Trauerspiel study. This is followed by discussion on Benjamin’s writing on Kant, and a resonance it has with aspects of Foucault’s Kantianism. This latter is further discussed in relation to Deleuze’s especially Kantian reading of Foucault’s power-knowledge assemblage." @default.
