- W4294678355 abstract "The states of the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula have faced Islamist and radical Islamist challenges. While they have incorporated religious establishments and symbols into their legitimacy formulas, they have also faced religious-based opposition. Shi‘i groups have protested against exclusions, such as in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, and Sunni groups have reacted to authoritarian policies at home and purportedly un-Islamic alliances abroad. But at times Islamists have been co-opted by a conservative rentierism, such as in Qatar and Oman, and even given formal political space, as in Kuwait, while at other times they have faced repression such as the Muslim Brotherhood in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Islamists are not united, moreover, and their fragmented rivalry over popular and regime favor often, but not always, diffuses their oppositional impact. The militant organizations of al-Qaeda and ISIS have drawn inspiration from a version of Wahhabism ironically at odds with that of the Saudi state, exploited civic disintegration in Yemen, and launched sectarian and anti-regime violence across the region. But a combination of economic dependency, repression, and Western support has provided the states with a successful counterforce. In addition, the radical Islamist movements have had narrow societal appeal and recruitment has been limited to a small proportion of the population. In general, the regional states’ securitization of Islamism suggests that, in its political participatory and radical guises, it is likely to be a persistent but containable presence." @default.
