- W4294706249 abstract "From the early days of radiology, radiologists have tried to estimate the size of the liver by different methods ranging from plain film studies to opacification of the adjacent organs, to the use of invasive methods.10, 28, 29, 38, 39, 42 In plain film studies, the assessment of liver size ranged from subjective impressions to different formulas derived from measurements made on anteroposterior and lateral films. (More sophisticated studies are discussed in other articles in this issue of the Clinics.) Cross-sectional studies show that a significant part of the liver lies in a posterior position in the abdominal cavity, and that this part of the liver is intimately related to the abundant retroperitoneal fat.42 In the supine position, this fat pad can be likened to a water bed filled with fat, with the liver lying on this bed, indenting it. The edge of the liver is recognized where the interface is parallel to the beam. Thus, the lower and lateral margins of the liver (hepatic angle) are seen in most supine abdominal films (Fig. 1).26 A detailed description of the lower edges of the liver is offered in Gelfand's article in this issue. The left lobe of the liver and the anterior edge of the right lobe of the liver, since they are anteriorly placed, do not indent the retroperitoneal fat pad and therefore are rarely seen radiologically. They are partially recognized only when they come in contact with gas (or barium) in parts of the gastrointestinal tract." @default.
