- W4294795949 abstract "Cardiac screening of athletes including a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) is recommended by numerous international bodies for elite sport. Cricket Australia recommends cardiac screening for all elite players every 2-5 years (depending on age). Normative data for athletes is relevant for assessing abnormalities. PURPOSE: To determine normative QTc changes by age of the athlete’s screening ECG, using a population of Australian elite cricketers. METHODS: 1766 screening ECGs from an existing database of elite Australian cricketers (male n=1159; female n=607) with age ranges 14-37 years were examined. QT interval, QTcB (corrected QT - Bazett’s) which is recommended by the International Criteria for athlete ECG interpretation, QTcF (corrected QT - Fridericia) and heart rate (HR) were assessed by age and sex. A best fit trendline (second order polynomial) was used to calculate the relationship between these parameters and age for males (M) and females (F). RESULTS: Average HR decreased from adolescent ages to adult ages (R2=0.56 (M), R2=0.63(F)). Average absolute QT interval increased over the same time period (R2=0.55 (M), R2=0.51(F)), but less than HR decreased, meaning that average QTcB decreased from adolescent ages to early adulthood, then increased again (R2=0.36 (M); R2=0.25(F)). There was a gradual more linear shift upwards in age with QTcF (R2=0.32(M); R2= .29(F)). These relationships were present in both males and females. CONCLUSIONS: Although QT is reported to increase slightly with age, in elite cricketers QTcB decreases from adolescence to earlier adulthood, driven by HR decreases. By comparison, QTcF increases slowly with age and appears to be a more accurate reflection of QTc for athletes with a tendency towards sinus bradycardia. Further study in a more diverse group of athletes using genetic and clinical follow-up is needed." @default.
