- W4294817229 abstract "PURPOSE: To examine if match-induced changes to mucosal immunity and hormonal status normalise within 72 h in elite-level professional football players. METHODS: Saliva samples were collected from 10 professional outfield players from one English Championship team at 1 h pre-, 1 h post- and 72 h post- competitive match-play. All players played between 75 and 90 min during the sample game, which was played in the mid-season phase. Saliva samples were analysed in duplicate for immunoglobulin-A, cortisol and testosterone using ELISA. A repeated measures ANOVA, post-hoc Bonferroni tests and Cohens d effect size calculations examined the temporal changes to each saliva variable. RESULTS: Immunoglobulin-A and cortisol increased from 1 h pre-match to 1 h post-match (ES = small; P = 0.857) (ES = large; P = 0.004) and remained elevated at 72 h post-match (ES = moderate; P = 0.115) (ES = moderate; P = 0.280) respectively. Testosterone concentration was similar between 1 h pre-match and 1 h post-match (ES = trivial; P = 1.000) and increased thereafter at 72 h post-match (ES = small; P = 0.424). The testosterone:cortisol ratio decreased substantially from 1 h pre-match to 1 h post-match (ES = very large; P < 0.001) and remained decreased at 72 h post-match (ES = moderate; P = 0.127). CONCLUSIONS: Football players can experience an immediate, substantial disruption to hormonal balance following match play, signalling a catabolic state which can manifest for at least 72 h. The nature of the immunoglobulin-A response to match play varied between players, supporting the need for individualised monitoring in practice. Coaches and practitioners should consider moderating player training load for at least 3 d post-match to accommodate hormonal recovery." @default.
