- W4294844892 abstract "Patient reported outcomes (PRO) are utilized to track self-reported recovery progress and inform clinical decision-making following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). It remains unclear if sex influences the trajectory of improvements in PRO over time post-ACLR. PURPOSE: The study purpose was to: 1) examine the effect of sex on the association between months post-ACLR and Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS) Quality of Life (QOL) scores in a cross-sectional sample of ACLR individuals; and 2) assess sex-differences in KOOS QOL at common clinical timepoints post-ACLR (6, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 months). METHODS: 131 females (20 ± 3 yrs) and 83 males (23 ± 4 yrs) with primary, unilateral ACLR participated in the cross-sectional study. KOOS QOL was completed at a single follow-up timepoint, occurring within 6-60 months post-ACLR. A multivariate, linear regression model was utilized to assess the interaction of sex on the association between time post-ACLR and KOOS QOL. The groups were stratified by sex, constructing separate linear regression analyses between months post-ACLR and KOOS QOL. Estimated marginal means (EMM) for selected clinical timepoints (6,12, 24, 36, 48, 60 months post-ACLR) were calculated by sex to predict KOOS QOL utilizing the primary model. Between-sex differences were assessed using independent t-tests at each clinical timepoint. RESULTS: In the primary model (R2 = 0.16, p < .01), greater time post-ACLR was a significant predictor of better KOOS QOL (β = 1.145, p < 0.001), sex alone was not associated with KOOS QOL (β = 6.317, p > .05) and a significant interaction existed between sex and time post-ACLR (β = -0.452, p < 0.01). Greater months post-ACLR associated with greater KOOS QOL for males (R2 = 0.29, p < 0.0001). While significant, months post-ACLR was a weak predictor of KOOS QOL for females (R2 = 0.05, p < 0.01). EMM for KOOS QOL were significantly greater for males in comparison to females at 36 (t210 = 2.76, p < 0.01), 48 (t210 = 3.02, p < 0.01) and 60 months post-ACLR (t210 = 3.09, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Males appear to exhibit steady improvement post-ACLR at increasing months post-ACLR, while females do not demonstrate the same linear increase in KOOS QOL. Females may require extended clinical interventions post-ACLR and different rehabilitation targets to address a plateau in KOOS QOL." @default.
