- W4294969829 abstract "Gaged discharge and well-defined cross-section make the open channels utmost suitable for the operation of hydrokinetic devices, where water flow is governed by gravity subjected to atmospheric pressure. The numerical modeling of an open channel is quite different from air/ocean modeling, as it requires free surface effect. Free surface acts as an interface between two fluids, namely air and water, with requisite that the top surface of water level has been subjected to zero parallel shear stress. Therefore, the study aims to focus on two phase numerical modeling in order to consider free surface effect. Three different turbulence models, namely k-epsilon, k-omega, and shear stress transport (SST), are investigated for the operation of hydrokinetic rotor. In two phase modeling, the performance of rotor has been analyzed through power coefficient as well as the alteration in flow velocity due to rotor’s operation is also monitored by measuring the flow velocity at six sections along the channel length. Further, experimental validation has been carried out for the selection of suitable turbulence model for two phase modeling. It is concluded that considering the free surface effect in two phase modeling improves the accuracy of numerical model significantly." @default.
