- W4296121856 abstract "“Be wary of the physician who claims they’ve never had to overcome challenges”, advises O N Ray Bignall II. A first-generation US citizen, Bignall was born to Jamaican immigrant parents in Chattanooga, TN, USA. “My father received his PhD in Physics from Florida State University, while my mother deferred her education to take care of our family”, states Bignall regarding his early childhood. Bignall proudly adds that his mother eventually returned to college and received her EdD in Education. Inspired by his parents, Bignall immersed himself in his studies and excelled at a young age in science. His love for science and helping others motivated him to pursue medicine as a career. Bignall received a scholarship to attend Howard University, Washington DC, USA, and attained a Bachelors degree in 3 years. He was then admitted into Meharry Medical College, TN, USA, and attained his Medical Degree in 2011. Despite his academic excellence, Bignall humbly admits that he struggled while preparing for medical standardised exams. “It took a great deal of humility to seek help and to make necessary adjustments”, discloses Bignall. Due to these challenges and his experiences at two Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Bignall entered residency with the mindset of incorporating advocacy and mentorship into his work as a physician. “Our field is one that is ripe for making mistakes and learning from disappointments,” shares Bignall. As a resident physician at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, OH, USA, Bignall was drawn to paediatric nephrology due to its “proximity to advocacy”. “Medical trainees of colour and those from marginalised backgrounds often enter medicine with ideals that are more than simply pursuing a career. There is a passion for serving the communities we come from”, states Bignall. His commitment to advocacy was further modelled by the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology's (ASPN's) John E Lewy Foundation Advocacy Scholars Program, particularly by its three most important components: legislative, regulatory, and research. As a result, Bignall serves as a member of The White House Health Equity Roundtable Series on Access to Care, and actively works to promote public health policy that helps address the needs of minority and low-income Americans through community engagement. Bignall also serves as the Inaugural Chair of the American Society of Nephrology's (ASN's) Health Care Justice Committee, and the Council on Medical Legislation for the National Medical Association." @default.
