Colonists noted local environmental conditions when considering the placement of towns, plantations, and hospitals as they tried to locate places of residence in healthy spots. This awareness of healthy and unhealthy places extended across racial lines. Crucially, the chapter demonstrates that rather than considering Black bodies to be healthier than white bodies in dangerous environmental conditions, white people perceived the suffering of Black people in hazardous environments. Thus, the placement of Black bodies in these conditions, including plantation labor, was a form of environmental racism." @default.
