The chapter links Addams’s narrative work to the contemporary “narrative turn in social science,” especially those practices Hyvärinen (2016) captures under the term “storytelling sociology.” The body of the analysis is organized around five propositions, illustrated with key narratives from Addams’s opus, describing what she sought to achieve by using narrative and analyzing the techniques she used to achieve it. The chapter looks at how she collected her data, mining “the neighborly relation” of her base, the people of the Hull House neighborhood; how she used literary techniques like the manipulation of point of view and the evocation of emotion through texture; and how she used narrative to formulate and explain her theory of democracy and social ethics." @default.
