Large quantities of eggs could be processed quickly by rotating them as they passed through an irradiator. The optimum conveyor speed was 2 m/min with rotations at 1.7 rps. This sterilization system allowed up to 3500 eggs/h to pass through an irradiator with a 1 × 10 cm electron beam window. Voltages between 80 and 250 kV resulted in a uniform surface dose as very low-energy electron beams scatter in the air. Inside dose did not exceed 100 mGy between 80 and 200 kV. The optimal voltage for sterilizing table egg was found to be 200 kV because salmonella is present deep in the shell of table egg and must be irradiated." @default.
