- W4297181305 abstract "The effectiveness or activity of the catalysts utilized in the visible light area is a key factor in the success of photocatalysis in many applications. Even though several photocatalysts have been claimed to be effective in a variety of photocatalytic applications, mullite-type with the general formula of Bi2M4O9 (M: Fe3+, Ga3+, and Mn3+) have grown in significance due to their distinct physiochemical features such as a narrow band gap energy that can be activated under visible light irradiation, suitable valence band position for oxygen generation via water splitting, magnetic properties that can be easily recovered by an external magnet, and non-toxicity. However, the potential applications of these materials are constrained due to the high rate of recombination. By mixing these materials with other semiconductors that have the proper band location, this problem can be resolved. Besides, the chemical substitution of M position and synthesis of nanoparticle materials with small particle size has a great influence on the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of mullite-type materials. This review discussed the structure, and general properties of mullite-type materials, then the characterization of these materials including physical, magnetic, and optical were highlighted. Finally, this review investigated for the first time the latest work on the photocatalytic activity of different mullite-types materials including Bi2Fe4O9, Bi2Ga4O9, and Bi2Al4O9 for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, hydrogen production, and overall water splitting, and CO2 photoreduction. This review also provides a general overview of Bi2M4O9 as visible light photocatalysts, covering current research efforts and offering some helpful insights for their continued advancement." @default.
