- W4297319655 abstract "Environmental movements are networks of informal interactions among individuals, groups, and organizations that are engaged in collective action motivated by concern about environmental issues. Their forms of action and issue focuses have varied over time and from place to place. Sometimes confrontational or involving civil disobedience, they have more often sought to mobilize and inform the public in order peacefully to pressure governments and corporations to cease environmentally damaging practices and to promote environmentally sustainable alternatives. Increasingly, concerns to conserve biodiversity within nations have been subsumed by efforts to dramatize threats posed by global climate change and pollution to human life and the environment. Although environmental movements are most evident within nation‐states, modern communications have facilitated internationally coordinated campaigns and the efforts of deliberately internationalist environmental movement organizations. A global environmental movement marrying the concerns of environmentalists in the global North with those of the global South is not yet fully realized but is increasingly in prospect." @default.
