- W4297498500 abstract "Given the lack of success with efforts targeted at individuals, we will focus on solutions that address our three root causes (lack of reusable knowledge, lack of role models, work methods) through a systems-based approach, specifically one that changes the way the work is done. We start first with understanding the brief history of lean, or the elimination of waste, beginning with the context of Japan’s growth in the automotive industry. By 1980, Japan had 29% of the world automotive production and filled 23% of the North American demand through imports. A number of books have described how the Japanese automotive industry, and specifically Toyota, was able to be so successful through the elimination of waste and increasing value-add, a process termed lean. The application of lean processes to an existing non-lean process can result in improvements of greater than 50%. Lean has been applied in a number of different industries. Lean Development, specifically, focuses on increasing the rate at which knowledge is developed in order to deliver a better product faster. Given this, Lean Development processes can be used to address all three of our root causes through a system-level change." @default.
