- W4297666571 abstract "Xenobiotics are foreign chemical substances that exert toxic effects. These toxic effects include pharmacological responses, immunological responses, and cancer. Most of the xenobiotics are recalcitrant, which means they are not degradable such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and trichloroethylene (TCE). Because of their recalcitrant property, they tend to accumulate in the environment and are responsible for environmental pollution. In soil, if they are present, they tend to deteriorate the quality of soil, making it unsuitable for the growth of plants. In water bodies, they get accumulated inside the bodies of aquatic life and then enter the food chain. They disturb metabolic activities and cause various diseases in plants and animals. Hence, it is necessary to remove them. There are various methods for their degradation, including chemical and biological methods. Microbial-based remediation is more environmentally friendly. It produces less toxic substances. However, not all substances are easily degradable. It is necessary to have insights into the process of bioremediation. Currently, multiple advanced approaches including proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics are employed to track the process of bioremediation and major genes involved in the process. This book chapter focuses on the microbial degradation of xenobiotics, and it also discusses the molecular mechanisms involved in bioremediation by using proteomics approaches." @default.
