- W4297670396 abstract "The gap between what is ‘possible-in-principle’ and ‘achievable-in-practice’ is large when it comes to the application of precision agriculture to extensive grazing systems. Part of the challenge is that these systems are spread over large and remote areas, and are also spatially heterogeneous, both in primary production and in pattern of utilisation by grazing animals. Animal-borne GPS collars can tell us where an animal goes and when, but costs and logistics prevent them being deployed on all animals in a herd. However, for certain purposes, even one collar per herd can yield valuable information, as when dealing with small ruminants foraging on open rangelands and forests, which are generally maintained as a spatially coherent group by a shepherd. In the case study presented here, a GPS-based herd tracking system was developed to map the cumulative presence of a number of goat herds employed to forage along fire-breaks in the forests of the Jerusalem Hills. In conjunction with supporting information and assumptions, the GPS point cloud can be converted into a map of annual stocking rate, with units of animal-presence-days per unit area. This in turn can be converted to estimates of annual offtake, with units of biomass removed per unit area, which can then be used to conduct a balance of accretion and depletion processes. The monitoring scheme is currently being scaled up in an effort to achieve regional coverage, and the concept is being extended to generate stocking rate maps at the whole-paddock level for fenced rangelands utilised by beef cattle herds. A data infrastructure providing reliable data on stocking rate and timing of grazing over large geographic areas would be transformational, presenting unprecedented opportunities to test assumptions about how animal density and timing of grazing influence productivity and measures of plant diversity. It would serve multiple management, planning and monitoring purposes, and would elevate the ongoing discussion around carrying capacity to another level." @default.
