- W4297672783 abstract "The neuropathology of dementia was established in the early 1900s by the discoveries from two neuroscientists, Camillo Golgi and Santiago Ramon y Cajal. Golgi developed staining methods that Cajal used as the basis for his theories of the connectivity of cells that have been shown to be correct. For their pioneering studies of cells in the brain, each man received the Nobel Prize. Using the new silver staining method, Alois Alzheimer identified plaques and tangles in the brain of a severely demented woman who died in her fifties. Another neuropathologist, Oskar Fisher, working around the same time as Alzheimer, described a large series of demented patients with “plaques” similar to those seen by Alzheimer. Because of a lack of interest in diseases of old age, only a few pathological studies were reported on patients with dementia until the 1970s. The disease described by Alzheimer was considered rare since the normal lifespan was less than 60 years of age and vascular disease of the brain was considered the most common. Biomarkers based on CSF, plasma, and positron emission tomography (PET) have been developed that provide a more precise and earlier diagnosis. Plasma biomarkers measured with ultrasensitive assay methods are expanding the biomarkers available." @default.
