- W4297682616 abstract "An increased number of environmental contaminants in the environment has prompted moderate to severe concern for public health. Hazardous chemical accumulation in the environment is causing much concern worldwide, prompting scientific communities to consider an eco-friendly solution to combat this existing issue. In this context, the use of microbial communities has emerged as a viable and versatile replacement since it is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and abundant in nature. The prevailing dire situation has prompted the development of several well-designed, competent, and innovative microbial strains to combat recalcitrant contaminants. The current overview contains extensive information regarding numerous microbial strains, as well as their use in the removal of organic (PAHs, PCBs, pesticides) and inorganic (heavy metals, metalloids, radionuclides) contaminants under both controlled and in-situ situations. Other applications of microbes, including those in agriculture (synthesis of biopesticides, bioinsecticides, bioherbicides, and biofertilizers), industries (fermentation, alcohol, and biofuel production), healthcare products (enzymes, vaccines), and diagnostics are also discussed in view of their biodiversity and competency. Recognizing the influence of genetically modified organisms on the environment, the advantages and disadvantages of microbial strains are addressed. It is believed that the use of microbial communities while following stringent containment standards is important to accomplish optimal and efficient employment of microorganisms." @default.
