- W4297942312 abstract "Atopic dermatitis is a very common skin disease, with increasing incidence in Europe and North America, where it represents a heavy burden for patients and healthcare systems. Typically affecting infants and children and spontaneously healing over time, it may however persist after adolescence or even occur de novo in adults. Several predisposing, causative and worsening factors have been identified so far. The role of microbes, either internal or external, has been extensively studied, and it has been demonstrated that they can trigger new AD lesions and/or exacerbate existing ones through superinfection of affected skin areas or alteration of the natural balance of non-lesional skin. At the same time, some commensals belonging to skin and gut microbiome play a protective role, by inhibiting potential pathogens and promoting correct development and appropriate response of the host immune system. The aim of this chapter is to summarize the main microbes studied and characterized so far in relation to AD and to outline their role in the complex pathogenetic mechanism of the disease and in the macrocosm represented by the AD patient, also in view of the possible current and future implications for treatment, management, and prevention." @default.
