- W4297971441 abstract "The title poem of Peter Balakian’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Ozone Journal (2015) is a fifty-four section poem that encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including Balakian’s life in New York City, memories of friends, his cousin’s death due to AIDS, his divorce, the hole in the ozone layer, and more.1 The jumping-off point for “Ozone Journal,” which makes up the entire second section of the book, is a trip Balakian took to the Syrian desert with a TV crew to document mass graves of Armenians who were systematically massacred by the Ottoman Empire during World War One (“Meeting and Interview” 8:20-9:25). Balakian’s relatives, including his great-uncle and grandmother, were survivors of the Armenian genocide and refugees to the United States, and the lingering fragments of the trauma inflected the rest of their lives as well as Balakian’s.2 One of the effects of trauma is that it creates an inability to represent one’s experience and emotions to others—the event is unimaginable, excessive to the extreme (LaCapra 119, 133). Traumatic events are sometimes called “limit events,” meaning “an event that goes beyond the capacity of the imagination to conceive or anticipate it … including the imagination of those not experiencing it” (LaCapra 133). Trauma is marked by gaps, not related as a coherent story, but spoken “through what is missing rather than what is present” (Charles 25). Because of the excessive and fragmentary nature of trauma, the question of “how to represent” such events, especially to those who did not experience them “poses a great challenge for artistic representation or treatment” (LaCapra 132–33). As “Ozone Journal” addresses the Armenian genocide, it struggles with the difficulty of representing a limit event." @default.
