This chapter focuses on how operational sounding retrievals from the NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS) provided situational awareness to the Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) and two scientific field campaigns, the Intensity Forecasting EXperiment (IFEX) and Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ). Situational awareness occurs when a forecaster or campaign organizer obtains and interprets a data set to anticipate a future state. Some of the future states explored in this chapter are convective initiation, smoke transport, and hurricane development. Through the HWT, we learned that NUCAPS must have both retrieval skill and low latency to offer situational awareness. Additionally, the forecaster must display NUCAPS in conventional tools, understand what they see, and perform comparisons with other data sources. Many of the lessons learned were useful for tailoring the NUCAPS algorithm, delivery, and interpretation. Like the HWT, scientific field campaigns are valuable because they focus on specific applications and the practical use of the satellite product. We delivered NUCAPS to IFEX organizers during the flight over tropical cyclones. Through the collaboration, we collected a data set that met the needs of both NUCAPS developers and campaign organizers which opened new research directions that may improve NUCAPS for situational awareness. FIREX-AQ campaign organizers used NUCAPS trace gas retrievals to track long-range smoke transport and requested diagnostics to evaluate NUCAPS skill. We show examples of how synergizing efforts between developers and campaign organizers can improve situational awareness by determining (1) when and where satellite products have value and (2) how to better tailor satellite products to operations." @default.
