- W4298415152 abstract "Parents of the Down syndrome patients do not have the syndrome, though the trisomy 21 is contributed by one of them. The advancement of knowledge on the disease and technological developments has established guidelines toward prenatal and/or preimplantation screening of the trisomic status in a growing fetus during the first-trimester gestational age. Prenatal testing modalities are almost safe and definitive for selecting a reproductive choice of termination or continuation of the pregnancies with trisomy 21 or Down syndrome. The extra 21 comes through the fertilization of an aneuploid gamete or mitotic nondisjunction of a developing embryo, indicating the presence of the extra chromosome in all or fraction (mosaicism) of cells but all tissues of a body (discussed in Chapter 3); thus, it cannot be subtracted. Therefore, prevention can minimize the risk of birth with Down syndrome. The compromised life of Down syndrome patients with respect to facial appearance, intellectual impairment, and early onset of neuro-degeneration renders them vulnerable both clinical and societal discrimination. Thus, parents of such children are always at stake to be blamed by partners/family members and even the child with the syndrome for either carrying such pregnancies and/or lack of their awareness. However, such anticipated issues of prenatal and carrier screening of at-risk pregnancies can be controlled through genetic counseling. Additionally, policies of the public health departments can effectively mitigate the burden of economic status of such individuals born with untreatable genetic impairments and curve an equitable niche in the society with that of the general population. Indeed, these individuals can achieve acumen in diversified professions and become financially independent. Taken together, an increase in awareness of the life of these individuals and prenatal screening can be exacerbated effectively by the involvement of governmental policies, aid, and ethical aspects." @default.
