- W4299421704 abstract "The seminar on Nigeria's population dynamics included 9 sessions covering methodology, fertility and mortality trends, spatial mobility of population, growth/composition/distribution, analysis of manpower resources, population dynamics, and policy recommendations. The opening session focused on the political economy, meaning, and implications of population dynamics in Nigeria. The session on methodology was concerned with an overview of the various techniques for population estimation, problems of data quality, analysis of demographic data, and measurement of vital rates. During the session on fertility trends, the state of existing knowledge in the country was reviewed along with temporal/spatial trends and determinants of fertility. A representative from the Economic Commission of Africa (ECA) commented on the views expressed during the discussion concerning fertility trends in the country, namely that fertility levels were possibly constant over time, increasing over time, or decreasing over time as revealed by the UN estimates and projections. Concerning the possibility of a decline in fertility, he cautioned against such an inference since the apparent trends were more of an artifact of the underlying assumptions implicit in the UN estimates and projections. To enhance increased knowledge of fertility trends in the country, the ECA representative suggested cooperation on the part of the National Commission and the country's academic community in the area of demographic studies. The session on mortality trends discussed mortality levels, determinants, population health and change. The session on spatial mobility focused on volume, causes and effects of internal and international migration. On the whole, the meeting was very useful in terms of updating the secretariat's knowledge of the components of Nigerian population growth. Such knowledge is useful in conjunction with preparing population estimates and projections for Nigeria within the framework of a similar exercise by the secretariat for all the ECA member states. During the closing session, the policy recommendations emanating from the main themes of all the sessions were highlighted." @default.
