- W4299835335 abstract "This chapter focuses on an important element of the learner's history: the stressful life experiences to which they have been exposed. It focuses on the most stressful experiences, those likely to leave serious psychological wounds: traumatic experiences. The chapter documents how certain traumatic contexts can negatively impact different stages of the cognitive chain that enables learning. A person exposed to a potentially traumatic event is likely to develop psychopathological symptoms that have the potential to have significant negative consequences on the individual's life. The most common pathology observed following a traumatic exposure is post-traumatic stress disorder. A growing number of studies have focused on the effects of trauma on different dimensions of learning. Some of these studies have focused on the effects of child abuse or sexual violence. The chapter considers several studies on the links between traumatic exposure and short-term memory." @default.
