- W4299901818 abstract "In the light of new political dispensations in Northern Ireland and South Africa, sections of the once-dominant Ulster Protestant population and white South African population have questioned their future role in a society they once controlled. This article will assess how by virtue of their 'siege mentality' status they resisted change throughout their history, rejecting any notion of compromise with their subordinates-Catholics in Northern Ireland and blacks in South Africa-fearing that this would threaten their privileged position. However, the acceptance of the inevitability of change by the previously dominant population has led to a new dispensation that has contrived to remove them from their privileged position. This article will assess the divisions that have opened up within these groups in relation to acceptance of the new political dispensation, before drawing on the analogies that can be identified regarding the development of these groups. As the new political dispensations dawned, Ulster Protestants faced up to the prospect of power-sharing with the leaders who represented the Catholic minority, while white South Africans came to terms with the reality of black majority rule. The history of these groups illustrates quite vividly the difficulties they were bound to encounter in accepting change." @default.
