- W4300102960 abstract "Specialized family planning and population organizations working in Eastern Europe have to reassess their strategies. Before the political upheaval, family planning was already familiar, a contraceptive industry was in place, and medical services were good; there was only a lack of suitable medical equipment, modern contraceptives, and training. The expectation that these nations would pass smoothly from abortion to contraception did not materialize, as social phenomena had been underestimated. Distribution of contraceptives supplied by agencies is carried out randomly; only a handful of privileged pharmacies have IUDs. Women receive no information on the types and prices of contraception. Family planning services remain in the abstract without specialist consultations and limited training of nursing and midwifery staff. The addresses of the family planning centers are unavailable. Contraceptive education is carried out by overworked staff in the preabortion or postabortion ward. Study trips are essential for specialists. Modern contraceptives methods (IUD, oral contraceptives, condoms) should be available in all pharmacies. Injectables and implants should also be introduced. Reasonable prices for contraceptives should be recommended and publicized. Information on consultation hours must be clearly displayed and consultations must ensure confidentiality. Specialized associations and women's groups should be financed as defenders of the public interest to run their own information services. Gynecologists, obstetricians, general practitioners, and midwives would benefit from access to technical information and reference books on contraception in the language of the country. For the population in general, information leaflets should be made available at consultations. TV should play an informative and educative role. International agencies need to develop their networks to contribute to success." @default.
