- W4300486430 abstract "Rabbit aortic preparations consisting of whole or minced intima and media show a large increase in the rate of incorporation of labeled acetate and of 3H2O into nonsaponifiable lipids and fatty acids after they are maintained in vitro for periods of 2 h or longer. The labeled nonsaponifiable lipids contain squalene and sterols, including cholesterol, and the proportion of cholesterol and other 27-carbon sterols increases with the time of incubation. The in vitro stimulation can be prevented by a prior 1-h pulse of cycloheximide. The stimulation of lipid synthesis is accompanied by an increase in protein synthesis and is followed one day later by an appearance of DNA synthesis. Incubation in a medium containing solvent-extracted serum is more stimulatory to the incorporation of acetate into lipids, but not to protein and DNA synthesis, than incubation in a medium with whole serum. Thus, exogenous lipids exert a specific inhibitory effect on lipid synthesis in this in vitro system." @default.
