- W4300577462 abstract "This chapter discusses peptides in motoneurons. In the anterior spinal cord, motoneurons receive a variety of peptidergic inputs coming from sensory, spinal, and supraspinal sources. Alpha- and γ motoneurons express a steadily increasing list of different neuropeptides, such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), galanin, cholecystokinin, substance P, and proopiomelanocortin- or POMC-derived peptides. As a group, the motoneuronal neuropeptides are regulated in a strikingly similar fashion: they reach a peak during the onset or the main phase of synaptogenesis, and decline to much lower levels in the adult. They become re-expressed after axotomy and during regeneration. This ontogenetic and post-traumatic regulation profile and functional evidence has emphasized the role of motoneuron neuropeptides as differentiation factors that are important in the formation or re-establishment of neuromuscular interaction. However, some neuropeptides may play a role in the physiological control of muscle function in the normal, adult organism. As many experiments on neuropeptide regulation were first performed or have only been performed on cranial motoneurons, data on neuropeptides in brainstem motor nuclei are included. It also includes information on other functionally important molecules, such as agrin, acetylcholine receptorinducing activity (ARIA) and other growth factors that are synthesized by motoneurons, and may influence the cholinergic and peptidergic signal transmission among motoneurons and their target, the skeletal muscle." @default.
