- W4300786665 abstract " OHQ vol. 116, no. 4 REVIEWS COMING HOME IN GOLD BROCADE: CHINESE IN EARLY NORTHWEST AMERICA by Bennet Bronson and Chuimei Ho Chinese in Northwest America Research Committee, Seattle, Washington, 2015. Illustrations, maps, tables, notes, index. 306 pages. $12.75, paper. For scholars researching the Chinese immigrant diaspora in the American West, the Chinese in Northwest America Research Committee (CINARC) website has long been a useful tool. The website is a fascinating pastiche of information, images, and primary documents covering a wide range of topics involving Chinese immigrant populations across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Coming Home in Gold Brocade gathers much of this material into a more portable (and affordable) format, and presents a range of rich information on the under- (and often mis-) represented topic of Chinese immigrants in the North American West. The authors’stated agenda includes a desire toshiftscholarlyfocusfromCalifornia, inorder to highlight the stories of the thousands of individuals living and working in communities to the north. As they explain: “It is an error to see the rest of North America as the tail and San Francisco the dog”(p. iv). The authors’ focus on Northwest America (versus the more familiar Pacific Northwest) is another deliberate choice both to expand the scope of Chinese immigrant scholarship to include Canada and Alaska and to frame the discussion within accurate geographical terms that would have been appropriate for emigrants traveling to North America. In addition to drawing attention to lesser-known Chinese immigrant population centers, Coming Home in Gold Brocade refreshingly offers a more emic perspective on the topic of emigration to the American West. The first chapter, titled “Through Chinese Eyes,”provides context for readers and allows the authors to individuate the experiences of Chinese immigrants to North America. This trend is maintained throughout by numerous photographs of individuals and families, resulting in a book that feels more intimate than other historical overviews. The book is organized into thematic chapters covering the demographic, economic, and social contexts of Chinese immigrants’ experiences in Northwest America. The second chapter, titled“Patterns in Time, Space, & Population” is grouped into six phases: Early Adventures (pre 1850), The First Northwestern Chinatowns (1850s–1870), Early Demographic and Economic Peak (1870s–1885),Hostility,Chaos, and Flight (1885–1887), Chinese Concentrate in Cities (1888–1900),and Future Trends (post 1900). The groupings allow readers to contextualize the content presented later in the book within the socio-political climate of the time, and it also frees readers from the familiar trajectory wherein the Chinese immigrant story leads up to, and is often overshadowed by, the 1882 Exclusion Act and its atrocities. Information gathered from Chinese and Western sources is presented as a mix of historical overview, local case studies, primary documents, and statistics. In addition to more familiar themes of railroad construction, mining, and laundry, the authors discuss a fascinating range of lesser-known subjects including the Canadian Opium industry, a brief overview of the early restaurant trade, and insight into the underexplored topic of farming and gardening. These topical Reviews vignettes, while brief, highlight the diverse and nuanced experiences for Chinese immigrants in Northwest America. Other chapters explore the public, political, and private lives of Chinese communities, touching on issues such as religion, social organization, marriage, and death. Short appendices also present additional information, including population statistics and other items of interest. Coming Home in Gold Brocade provides rich information for researchers and casual readers alike. The material is presented in a thoughtful and interesting manner, and the authors’ transparency in regard to the reference material and archival sources is also valuable, as the book provides several intriguing rabbit holes that one could easily fall into and explore.
