- W4300800400 abstract "Exercise-induced anaphylaxis is a unique form of physical allergy, the recognition of which is becoming increasingly common. The clinical features are indistinguishable from anaphylaxis mediated by activation of IgE-sensitized mast cells by specific substances. The fact that attacks are not invariable after similar degrees of exertion has suggested that additional factors are necessary. Patients have come to be recognized in whom ingestion of a specific food is necessary for EIA to occur; in whom exertion in the postprandial state is necessary for the development of symptoms; and in whom the postprandial state appears to be conducive to the development of EIA, although not absolutely required. Treatment of the acute attack does not differ from management of anaphylaxis of any etiology. Recognition of the relation to exercise, or to exercise and the ingestion of a specific food, or to exercise in the postprandial state is essential for prevention. Affected individuals should avoid exercise for 4 to 6 hours after eating, avoid substances specificially associated with precipitation of attacks, and modify their exercise programs as needed." @default.
