- W4300845061 abstract "EDITORIAL NOTE This secoDd issue of T'ang Studies marks another step toward the sort of scholarly community envisioned nearly two years ago at the first meeting of the Society in Chicago. For years students of the T'ang lagged behind those of other periods in organization and cooperation. The lines of the T'ang poet Meng ChiaoJ.. ~1 051-814)-- - if fi -if; , ~ fi ~ ~ ~ --may seem appropriate to describe the growth and progress of the Society in its initial months. May we thus in this first chia-tzu year of the sexengenary cycle continue to stride briskly in the same direction. In the pages below Christopher Beckwith's aptly titled Moving Right Along catalogues one form of growth; another increase is evident in the Membership Directory Update.1I And the articles and notes in this issue testify to a third sort of expansion--T'ang Studies, Number 2 offers three scholarly studies and a response to the single original piece from Number 1. The mix of Raoul Birnbaum's study of Buddhism and its mountains, J. Russell Kirkland's note on a Taoist, and Paul W. Kroll's historical (thus Confucian?) disquisition on T'ang dates is satisfying. It is hoped future numbers will continue to expand the sections of original scholarship and communication on problematic points such as those treated by Elling Eide in Number 1 and reexamined herein by D. L. McMullen. May we expect more on the subject from Elling Eide? Another tradition begun in Number 1, that of republishing useful materials of sister societies, is set forth in this issue with the appearance of the Communication of the T'ang Literature Society of the People's Republic of China. Finally, Tatsuhiko Sea's A Draft Bibliography of Works Concerning Chiang-an city during the T'ang Period, originally read at the XXXI International Congress of Human Sciences in Asia and North Africa in Tokyo last September, begins a practice I would urge my successors to foster. At present many valuable bibliographies circulate informally-bibliographies which may be better disseminated in a publication such as ours. I speak of successors because I have found that the enthusiasm and growth in the Society noted above has led to demands for a larger and less informal publication. Although I applaude the idea, it asks more of me than 1 am able to give at this time. This number will thus be my last. Despite my brief association with T'ang Studies, I have had the honor of helping to launch the newsletter and the edification of working with members and officers of the Society. I wish the new editor well, and would be ready to assist in any way deemed appropriate. In the interim, please continue to address submissions and books for review to me. William H.
