- W4300979328 abstract "It is a well-known fact that Jammu and Kashmir has been an area rich in unexplored biodiversity and is one of the Indian hotspots with high numbers of endemic species, including species from an extraordinarily wide range of aquascapes. Like lakes, accompanied by wetlands and rivers, freshwater ecosystems constitute the largest part of the aquatic ecosystems recorded in the union territory (UT). A rich diversity of macrophytes is found in these freshwater ecosystems. The biotic assemblage of macrophytes forms a group of macroscopic plant species that are evolutionarily diverse. They comprise vascular aquatic plants, bryophytes, macroalgae, and charophytes, with high adaptation levels at the morphological, physiological, and biochemical levels. The chapter examines existing evidence on the biological properties and roles of aquatic macrophytes that are essential components of the aquatic ecosystems, including the wetland ecosystems. Nevertheless, in many freshwater ecosystems, anthropogenic 40activities have likely caused surface water contamination, and eutrophication turning into a concomitant decrease in macrophytic diversity. Subsequently, proper protection of freshwater and wetland habitats, including surveillance and regulation, is a prerequisite for significant biodiversity restoration and management." @default.
