- W4300979893 abstract "This chapter seeks to expand the scope of critical social work to include environmental justice and socio-environmental debates. Increasingly recognised as the most cross-cutting issue of our time, climate change exemplifies the disproportionate burden of runaway capitalism and its oppressive structures on underserved communities worldwide. We begin by outlining the fraught history of environmentalism, especially in Europe and North America, and its colonial legacy around the world. The chapter adopts a critical Marxist lens and highlights community and indigenous perspectives to examine social and natural system interdependencies and proposes how critical social workers can amplify and support frontline community voices and demands. Finally, the chapter touches upon key socio-environmental debates of our time. We examine policy mechanisms of climate-responsive social protection frameworks with an exposition on the Green New Deal and the Degrowth movement with a critical environmental justice lens to propose paradigmatic shifts for the future of critical social work." @default.
